Hip replacement (total hip arthroplasty) is surgery to
replace a worn-out or damaged hip joint. The surgeon replaces the old joint
with an artificial joint (prosthesis). This surgery may be a choice after a hip
fracture or for severe pain because of arthritis.
If you have these arthritis symptoms, you should
consider a hip replacement:
- severe
hip pain that is not relieved by medication and that interferes with your
work, sleep or everyday activity
- hip
stiffness that restricts motion and makes it difficult to walk
There are a few simple measures that you can take to
make life easier when you return home after hip replacement surgery, including:
- Keep
stairs climbing to a minimum. Make the necessary arrangements so that you
will only have to go up and down the steps once or twice a day.
- Sit
in a firm, straight-back chair. Recliners should not be used.
- To
help avoid falls, remove all throw rugs and keep floors and rooms clutter
free.
- Use
an elevated toilet seat. This will help keep you from bending too far at
the hips.
- Keep
enthusiastic pets away until you have healed completely.
In a total hip replacement (also
called total hip arthroplasty), the damaged bone and cartilage is removed
and replaced with prosthetic components. Wong Medical Centre provides best treatment for total
